I have just returned from a decent break in Canada where the temperatures were in the high 80’s and it’s not just a return to the typical dampness of a Scottish summer that has me irritated. I can accept there were no new signings in my absence and it concerns me greatly that we haven’t offloaded the dead wood from last season.
But more directly, why is Georgios Samaras still at Parkhead ?
In the end not scoring enough goals cost us the title last season. The difference was that Jelavic, Naismith and Lafferty (yes, really) delivered the goods when it mattered. We had two strikers, Hooper and Stokes, who scored consistently but we needed back up and the big Greek did not provide it. My hackles still rise when I recall the Ross County semi final of 2010 and Neil Lennon did well to cull that team and move on although has Samaras remained and he was one of the worst culprits on that fateful day at Hampden. He should have been off loaded there and then.
The question has to be asked; who awarded this guy a new contract before the end of last season ? For a Celtic striker to score 7 goals on 37 appearances (I accept a number of them were as a substitute) is absolutely criminal. Add to that the lethargic, half hearted attitude he displays and the fact that he breaks up more Celtic attacks than an opposition defence. Think of the number of occasions he turns back or runs across field selfishly keeping the ball, refusing to play the quick pass that is required and thus allowing the opposition time to regroup.
The subject of that new contract is certainly perplexing. On CQN Paul 67 often preaches about the merits of ‘asset management’ and I could see the value of this if Celtic intended moving him on and obtaining a fee. However, as Harry Brady has often said on this site, the world of industry and commerce are now rewarded by ‘performance pay’ and this being the case you have to wonder at how a player who is consistently sub standard can be rewarded by being given a lucrative new contract ?
There appears to be myth that he is the only forward who can play the role as a lone striker especially in games against Rangers. He is still living off the new year victory at Ibrox although he cancelled that out with his half hearted penalty miss at Ibrox in May on the day that had we scored that penalty it would have been all over…and they knew it as well. It’s always a regret of mine that Kris Commons didn’t just wrestle the ball from him. In that Ibrox match the only thing of any significance Samaras did was to miss that penalty. In contrast Antony Stokes was on the field for only 15 minutes and won Celtic their penalty and should have had another. And yet some will maintain that Samaras is more effective than Stokes.
What concerns me most is that Neil Lennon’s judgement may be called into doubt. I like and trust Lennon to the full. However this coming season we need all hands on deck and we have no room for any passengers but he does appear to have a blind spot for his Greek forward. For the salary we pay Samaras think of what you could pick up in another market for the same wages. Even Rasmussen, in his few appearances, showed a bit of heart and could be a better bet. The thought of injuries to Hooper and Stokes and being left with Samaras and Murphy is a very sobering thought at this time.
I’ve never disliked any Celtic player in the 39 years I have been attending games at Celtic Park but Samaras is testing my patience to the absolute limit. And yet this article is not meant to be a personal attack. The judgement I have called on Samaras is not a short term, knee jerk reaction. It is an objective opinion on a player who has all the attributes but has not delivered in his three seasons at the club and been a constant disappointment.
It’s time to end Celtic’s Greek tragedy. |

The New Year game for some reason has grown to mythical proportions. After that game everyone was claiming Rangers couldn't handle him and were terrified of facing him. It was a lot of Barry. You were right about the penalty as well. Score it and the league was over. Typical Sammy.
He is on above 15k a week FFS. I honestly hope behind the scenes we are actively trying to shift Sammy , Murphy and Rasmussen. Think for a moment about the kind of striker we could afford wages wise ?
I personally feel we have been treated to a lot of spin and PR this close season when it came to striking targets. Bellamy, Long and Bothroyd were ALL simply unrealistic.
I like St Anthony will be a bit narked if we end this window without a decent striker on board and if not all 3 at least 1 of Sammy, Murphy and Rasmussen punted.
It's amazing how many online 'experts' will tell you how good Samaras is.
Yesteday I nearly pissed myself laughing when someone on CQN actually claimed that the rest of the team is holding Samaras back.
My one quibble is your suggestion that Rasmussen could do a better job. I think we have toaccept that he has been another disaster along with Hooiveld, Murphy and Samaras.
Finally could you please write a similar appraisal of that other overpaid underperformer Scott Brown.
I will truly despair if he is given another multi year £20k+ contract.
No tears would be shed by me if he left, but I also wouldn't be surprised if one season, something just clicked with him he could be a class apart.
I also thing yous are being harsh on Scott Brown, I really think he came into his own and was one of our best players and finally looked like a celtic captain.

I had the good fortune to be in the stands at Eastlands watching Man City playing Arsenal when The Trani made his scoring debut at Rugby Park for the Hoops and the words of the Man City fans around me still ring in my ears as they had watched me checking my phone every 30 seconds for Hoops news and I had told them that our new loanee had scored. "We'll give you him for nowt mate, and we'll pay for his train fare!"
He couldn't be THAT bad, could he?......

I think Brown will walk out on a Free next summer.
Who would have thought we would be starting with no new Goalkeeper signed? The season should be starting August 15th, then maybe we would have our squad finalised by then. THis early KO is a joke, and tbh i'm not really in the mood yet for a new season. Another few weeks and i would be ready to go.
A keeper and a target man, and the league should be in the bag!
To be fair to the club we have not been helped by the ridiculously early start to the season. I have written on here before the feedback given to me by agents about when clubs like ours can do transfer activity - early for Bosmans and domestic, late (for various reasons out with our control but too lengthy for this comment) for foreign players.
I suspect we will see 2 players in and at least 3 out by end of the window. (we have an abundance in midfield)
Re: the other players - I don't think Loovens is AS BAD as many say and is useful to have as a squad player and Brown started turning me around to his ability last term.
Your angst about Giorgios is well grounded and long standing, but your constant harking back to Ross County does your case no good at all.
Despite what many say, Giorgios was by no means the worst Celtic player that day and there have been many games where it would not have mattered what he did , his detractors will never give him any credit.
As Eddie has discussed on the podcasts, he may yet have a role to play should we qualify for the Europa league. No one else on the books can play up front on their own.
His lack of goals is a concern, but he does not deserve the abuse that is directed towards him.
As for Rasmussen - how do we know he can't play - he never got a chance.
Unlike the peanut gallery Neil has the job of getting the best out of the players he has. I think he is a brilliant man manager. Samaras had a good World Cup last year then like a lot of other players from South Africa he had a bad season. He's still young yet too though and he will get better especially with Lennon in charge. So called Celtic fans are still having a go at Scott Brown. I hope he is at Celtic as I expect for many years to come. He's the type you build teams around. Why? Because he's Scottish,(He aint gonna go anywhere) He's reliable, He takes no prisoners, He's a leader on and off the park, He would walk through a brick wall for Neil Lennon, He does the best line in celebrations it has been my privilege to see in many a year, and finally cos he's a bloody great player who rarely gives the ball away, whose young too and will improve yet. Then theres Glenn Loovens another of those condemned. Since getting back in the team he's never put a foot wrong yet still the mean spirited mumble and mutter. The laddie wants desperately to play for Celtic it's high time he was getting encouraged by the "best fans in the world" Instead of the contempt he gets. Then there's Shaun Maloney. He almost seems the worst of. The reason? That's easy because he's a true Tim and therefore has NO RIGHT having a bad game or getting injured. It's incredible. I don't know about a Fly in the ointment but its high time Celtic fans got behind all these players and rubbed the ointment of support in. Because to me it disny matter what religion they are, what colour they are or what name they have. If they want to play for Celtic thats good enough for me because it doesny matter what name or number is on the shirt its the badge on the front that counts. To many have forgotten that HAIL HAIL.
