I hope everyone had a happy Christmas and that Santa was good to you. Me? The usual socks, shirts etc. However when I was a kid I only looked out for three things : 1. The Playing for Celtic book (I have all 21 of them from 1969 to 1989) 2. A football strip (Any team sufficed) 3. A Subbuteo team (The thrill of getting the exotic Feyenoord team still remains) Rodger Baillie edited the Playing for Celtic publications each year and sadly missed they are too. As far as football strips are concerned I can recall getting Leeds, Man U, Scotland, Arsenal, Norwich, Man City and Wales. I’ve mentioned previously it was always a sore point that I was never allowed the Celtic one until I was a teenager however I confess to having a real liking for the old West Ham strip I was given when I was 8. I thought I was a potential little Bobby Moore but was unfortunately about to discover that when it came to playing football I was more comparable to Patrick Moore. And many a subbuteo tournament was fought in Langlands Road Govan between the mighty Sterry Albion (me with the Feyenoord team), Dusseldorf (John with his Crystal palace team) and Munich 19 (James with his Argentina team) that would put an Old Firm game to shame. Forget your fancy graphics FIFA football computer games this was the real deal featuring tactics, skill and strategy. If I have one Christmas wish it would be this ; that they would make a different ending to Von Ryan’s express. Every Christmas they show that movie and every Christmas American POW Francis Albert (Von Ryan) chases that damned train out of the tunnel and gets inches from Trevor Howard’s hands and safety before the beastly Nazis shoot him in the back. I still can’t bear to watch that ending even after all these years… Anyway I digress. Here is the Bhoy in the picture New Year's quiz. There’s sod all New Yearish about it but the title has a nice ring to it. The first image you will see shows six ex Celts for you to get. Nothing too hard in this. The next image shows two pictures of Celtic in action. The first from 1980 shows a Charlie Nicholas goal and the question is who against and what is the venue. The second of the two images shows Tam Gemmell from 1971 and the question is the same - name the opposition and venue. These two are a wee bit harder but I’m sure there are sharp eyed clever Celts out there who will get it. And if you don’t know just take a guess. First one with the correct answers will be the undisputed Celtic Underground quiz king of 2009. What finer honour could there be? I wrote this before the game but I can’t pretend I don’t know the score…yeehah !!! Remember to click on the images to see the larger picture. |
