lennon_hand_on_heartAt the close of another year, is it safe to say that Neil Lennon’s Celtic have really turned the corner? The evidence would seem to suggest that Celtic are now turning in consistent performances and achieving a level very few would have thought possible, even a month ago.

On November 5th, things did indeed look precarious for Neil Lennon with Celtic a massive fifteen points behind the seemingly invincible Rangers. As the laptop loyal sharpened their crayons in anticipation of penning Lennon’s obituary, Celtic somehow managed to confound their biggest critics (and indeed a large section of the Celtic support) and turn the boat around as it headed for the rocks. With next Wednesday’s Old Firm game looming, the deficit has been dramatically slashed to just one single point with Celtic having home advantage.

To what do we attribute this fantastic comeback? To some the game at Rugby Park was the critical point, when Celtic managed to snatch honour from the jaws of ignominy. Three nil down at half time, it looked as if there was no way back for Lennon’s men. Whatever was said at half time had the desired effect and Celtic fought back to grab a draw.

What is sometimes forgotten is that Celtic are only now getting their best players back, Lennon seemed to be cursed with key players being injured and never having the luxury of playing a settled team. There was a constant need to play different players in new systems every game.

The effect this had on the balance of the team is obvious to everybody.

Teams can only improve if they have continuity and if the players are secure in a system they understand.

Another factor in Celtic’s improvement has been their participation in the Europa League. Many argued that Celtic’s participation would have a detrimental effect on their domestic form. In fact initially that seemed to be the case, but as Celtic progressed their way through the games, they seemed to get stronger and were unlucky in the event not to qualify for the later stages. Celtic’s pool was made up of good teams from Europe’s strongest leagues which gave Lennon the opportunity to pit his wits against top class continental coaches.

When one looks at the remarkable turnaround in Celtic’s recent fortunes, we have to consider the role of NeilLennon. If he can be blamed for things when they go wrong, then it is only right that he be given praise when he gets things right.

His decision to stick with Samaras seems to be totally justified as he has begun to show what he can do when he is so inclined. Playing him wide left has been an inspired move and he, along with young James Forrest have been the main inspiration in the current Celtic revival. Many Celtic supporters wanted Samaras out in the last transfer window and were dumbfounded by Lennon’s insistence on standing by the big Greek. It may prove to be a masterstroke by Lennon as Samaras is currently paying back his manager’s trust with interest.

Then there is Forrest himself. Under Lennon’s tutelage this young man has developed at an impressive rate. I went along to watch Scotland under 21’s here in Holland and could not believe how mature, strong and talented he has become. The Dutch commentators were in raptures about Forrest. We then turn our attention to one Victor Wanyama.

I had seen Wanyama a few times down in Belgium, but had doubts whether or not he could adapt to the whirly burly of Scottish football. My doubts were soon put to rest as we have seen the big man clearly demonstrate that he could go on and become a big star at Celtic Park.

There are several other youngish players on the fringes and the mood at Celtic Park is upbeat. In general, we have a relatively young squad which is developing at a pleasing rate. I will make no rash predictions about next Wednesday’s game, but suffice to say if we get a fair crack of the whip from the referee then I would be very confident about the rest of the season.

Were Neil Lennon to wrest the SPL championship from Rangers, it would be a magnificent achievement given what this man had to endure last year. Lennon as a manager seems different this year, a bit more distant and analytical. The Scottish press would no doubt ascribe this change of behavior to their role in making Neil Lennon ‘behave’ in a dignified way. Neil Lennon has certainly learned, but not in the way they mean.

First of all, he is much smarter than they give him credit. He knows how things work in Scottish football from his past experiences, the first thing to do is get even, don’t get angry.

Secondly, Neil Lennon knows that if he can win the SPL title his long- term future at Celtic Park is secure and he and his team, will have the opportunity to build a team that will do the club proud for many years.

Finally there is the personal aspect between Neil Lennon and Ally McCoist. I am not so sure that McCoist is quite the affable, cheeky chappie that he likes to present and which is cultivated by the Scottish media. We will probably never know what McCoist said to Neil Lennon at the infamous game at Celtic Park, but whatever it was enragedLennon. As we see McCoist’s limitations being exposed with every passing week, next Wednesday will be a great opportunity for Neil to shake his hand at the end of the game as Celtic run out winners.

Smile, retain a dignified silence and watch Rangers implode. The future belongs to Neil Lennon’s Celtic.

Dutchbhoy - I hope in 24 hours time I can come on here and say I've got it wrong about this current Celtic side and our manager.

But I don't see how anyone can be too confident about this team of ours.

How many league games have you come away from saying - "that was excellent today - I really enjoyed that" ? In the psat two months I'd say one game - against St Mirren.

Now if we were to win every game from now 'til the end of the season 1-0 with utter bore-fests each time I'd be delighted. But we won't. The reason why we've been scraping wins against dross like motherwell, dundee utd, hearts, dunfermline, aberdeen is because we are not very good. In the vast majority of these games we create so few chances that it is bordering on the ridiculous.

I cannot honestly remember a Celtic team with absolutely no flair players in it. Going back in time we've had McGeady, Nakamura, Larsson, Moravcik, Di Canio, McStay, Collins, Nicholas, etc etc. We have no one who is on anywhere near the level of these players - never mind actually neing flair players.

We are a brutal team to watch who have won only one of oue Europa League games and that against a honking French outfit.

It saddens me that we are accepting such dross which is ultimately down to the ridiculously unambitious strategy pursued by Mr Desmond.

So rather than proclaiming the future belongs to a guy whose team still sit a point behind an utterly terrible rangers team let's look at the reality of the situation.

We'll have mediocrity like Mulgrew, Wilson, Rogne, Brown, Cha, Ledley, Ki, Matthews in that team tomorrow. I'd be amazed if we win that game. But a few years ago a guy who led us to 3 titles on the spin was almost hounded out by some of our own due to the football we played.

Even in Strachan's darkest days, the football was rarely as poor as we have seen from Celtic this season. How short are the memories of some in the Celtic world?

Cheers for a good article Dutchbhoy.

I agree with much of what you say here. Moreover, I have maintained throughout this season that the impact of losing Izaguirre cannot be underestimated. In and of itself, losing one player, a left-back no less, is not normally a season jeopardising event.

Anybody who witnessed Neil Lennon's quite horryfying reaction to the news of Izaguirre's injury would have seen the angst that it immediately caused. Lennon's subsequent assertion that he may have to buy a left-back left myself and many others puzzled. Surely there were positions that needed strengthening more urgently?

The absence of Emilio threw this season's initial plan of assault out of the window early doors. It was only when I watched re-runs of some of last years games that I realised how integral this man was to our success last year. I honestly don't think this can be overlooked.

He is undoubtedly Celtic's best player. Think of any other team in the world. Okay. Their best player, out for half a season. Okay. They'd struggle a bit wouldn't they?

This has to be taken into account along with the by turns pathetic perfomances of Commons, Kayal and Hooper at the start of the season. Essentially, Celtic began this season with their top perfomers either crocked or abysmally off-form.

We didn't even 'hang in there'. We were down and out. But every time we encountered a bad result, Neil re-iterated, the players are not doing themselves justice. He believed in his own ability and that of his players.

To turn around a 15 point deficit in less than three months is impressive however you slice it.

As Eddie & Harry mentioned in one of the recent podcasts, the Europa League has ironically buoyed the teams' belief, enhanced their level of performance and allowed the manager to try, with some success, different tactics and formations.

Victor Wanyama deserves his own article.

Regardless of how we fare tomorrow night, I think we will win the league handsomely. However, I am veeeery cautious about tomorrow (I've never seen such low expectations from bluenoses since Big Eck was allowed to buy) as I think a Rangers team written off to this extent could drag us down into a very dirty fight.

On your point about McCoist, I am not proud to admit I have been, shall we say, exposed to the individual on many occasions. Your hunch about him is correct, he is the smarmy, crooked politician who's act everybody has bought into. He's in the 'nice' business. Never a manager.

Finally, this Macq character and his drab, defeatist, self-loathing and unimaginitive tripe (dressed up as realism) is best ignored. I don't know what he gets out of Celtic. He is certainly no supporter.

I may follow this up with Part 2...

Macq

I've been a critic of Neil Lennon in the past - to the extent of producing an article on this very website declaring why I think he should have resigned after the 0-0 home draw to Hibs - but your negativity is beyond pathetic.

How many league games have I came away saying it's been good? All 10 in a row(we just beat Dunfermline after beating Rangers 2-1 incase you wondered) that we've won under Lennon's guidance you muppet! As for describing Rennes as a "honking French outfit" well I find that description extremely wrong considering they are currently 5th place in the 5th best league in Europe (Ligue 1 incase you didn't know) and are only 5 points behind PSG in 1st place.

"The reason why we've been scraping wins against dross like motherwell, dundee utd, hearts, dunfermline, aberdeen is because we are not very good."

WHAT?!? If we weren't very good, or even just plain good, we wouldn't win all of those games or 8 on the bounce now would we? Nobody is claiming that we are near the level of say a MON Celtic team but get used to reality and stop crying and moaning and lashing out at every opportunity because that does nothing. We might be a point behind Rangers but considering we were 15 behind 2 months ago, it's been an UNBELIEVABLE comeback and yet you never give Lennon any credit (I suspect if he won the Champions League you'd still find something about Lennon to complain about). For you tonight is win win because if we win, you will bask in the glory of the win and us being back on top but if we don't then it justifies your constant pessimistic analysis of a club you apparently support. As for the lack of flair, it didn't look that way when we took 4 points off Rennes or when we very nearly beat the current 3rd best team in Italy in their own back yard.

Your attitude, in times of success or adversity alike, is not worthy of being a Celtic supporter and it does not benefit our current players one iota. If you don't like it then you can just head down the road to the City of Manchester stadium every weekend. Scrooge personified is what you are, son.

The Thinker - if you disagree with my view that is fair enough - but don't change the words I typed just to try to suit your own flimsy argument.

I asked how many games folk have come away from saying "that was excellent today..." Mayeb you could answer that eh?

If we were a good side we would be more often than not pummelling these crap teams into the ground. But we struggle to beat them because we are not that much better than them.

My comments were also meant to highlight the blatant double standards amongst the support regarding the leeway Lennon receives compared to his managerial mentor Strachan. It is ridiculous.

We are a poor side, with little creativity, going into a massive match relying on duds like Samaras and Cha, hoping that average players like Wilson and Matthews can raise their games.

Welcome to Neil Lennon's Celtic. Welcome to Celtic in the 21st century.

:-(((

Good article Ductchbhoy! the optimistic prose in relation to Lenny and Celtic is well warranted; i like many supporters was wondering if Lenny did indeed "Have it" on more than one occasion the phrase "he's no goat it" would be pitched in relating to Lenny and Celtic's woes. Let's be honest here, he was 45mins away from getting the sack, if the team that eventful day at Killie didn't secure a point i'm sure Lenny's Jaikit would have fallen from that Shoogly nail..

He's proven that the team and indeed himself can be versatile, this run has been great for Lenny the team and of course it shows up the 4th estate muppets for the fuds they are...Theres also the added bonus of winding up those so called fans that do nothing but attack the club they purport to support..

let's do this Mob tonight...put them in their place....

Well done Joe - you just go and denigrate other fans of the club you purport to support.

It seems like guys like Lennon who has become a millionaire thanks to being an ordinary football player with Celtic can do no wrong. How dare anyone criticise him or any of his highly prized players. Yet those poor sods who fork out thousands of their hard earned pounds following the rubbish that now masquerades as Celtic footballers - stuff them. Unless they worship at the feet of the great Lenny and Peter and Sami and Cha and Wilson they can get to feck.

For a minute there I thought tax dodgers FC were top of the league having won the last three titles? Must have been an awful dream?

Well done again Joe - your logic is outstanding.

Macq, i'm for from an apoligist for Lenny and the board, Lawwel in my eyes shares a large proportion of the blame for the debacle post Strachan-which i may add i fully backed when he was manager- The chinless gormless one was his bag which he backed with millions, that we'll never see again..

Do you take any comfort in a win?! or are you so wrapped up in your loathing of Lenny-GB-Wilson-Cha-LAWWEL etc that any negativity in the performance or from the press is pounced upon to reinforce your polemic critiques.

Your right in the fact that at the moment this team has failed when it has really mattered and counted, ICT last season called for character determination and winners we were lacking in all..and Lennon recieved his fair share of critcism, that you can be sure of.

"For a minute there I thought tax dodgers FC were top of the league having won the last three titles? Must have been an awful dream?

Well done again Joe - your logic is outstanding."

To be honest Macq i find your logic a tad mental to be honest, so having turned the team around, turning in better footballing displays and showing a toughness that was lacking you still want to disband, destroy and criticise the team?!

On a day that could shape our season and title ambitions you still want to attack the club, i find that a tad malevolent.

If this team and Lenny fail this season you can pat yourself on the back you have been vindicated, until then i'll back a winning manager and team...

Macq, although I mentioned your incessant and meritless negativity, I forgot just how poor your football knowledge is coupled with fuzzy logic.

I have seen you slag off Joe Ledley, who is an excellent footballers, the 19 year old Adam Matthews, who looks very likely to become a brilliant player, and now you call Lennon "an ordinary footballer". Deary Deary me.

"When I signed him in December 2000 I only thought about him as a player. I didn't envisage him being a Celtic manager – primarily because I was. But he's pushed on and he knows the game very well indeed. He was an excellent player and, if he becomes half as good a manager as he was a player, that would be excellent."

You can work out who said that. And I've called it on here before. You don't like Neil Lennon.

Further, you mention "the guy who led us to 3 titles on the spin". Yet his team included such dross as McManus, Caldwell, Naylor, Flood, Killen and to an extent Hartley. I think every respective player who gets a game currently for Celtic is a big improvement.

Can you honestly not see how bitter you are towards our manager?

-28 #9 Macq 2011-12-28 13:49
LDB - there is this myth that has grown arms on legs around Timternet about Ledley. Firstly he must have missed about 30% of games since he joined due to injury - that's not good.

Lennon didn't consider him good enough to start last time at the zoo = why not if he is so good.

He is likely to get the nod at LB tonight which would be a ludicrous decision IMO. He's been rotten when played there.

His natural position is central mid yet it's been a long long time since he started there. He is known in my house as the invisible man because he does so little in a game. When he signed he had a reputation as being a box to boc goalscoring midfielder. He has shown very little of that sort of play.

As far as Killen and Flood are concerned - they hardly got games for us. They were shoite signings no doubt about that (maybe if we had got Fletcher rather than Flood 4 years ago in january there would be no 4IAR chance for rangers). With Caldwell and mcManus they weren't too hot I'll give you that - but they are light years ahead of any of the current crop IMO. the fact that we have managed to weaken an already poor central defensive partnership proves my point exactly. Duds like Majstorovic, Wilson, Mulgrew, Wanyama (who may be a decent holding midfielder but not a centre half) are testament to the continued deterioration since Lennon took over.

As for young Matthews - he has been average at right back and shocking when played at left back. To be fair to the lad he is never a left back, but I have this nightmare scenario that he will play LB tonight with Cha at RB. Stick in Mulgrew and Wilson/Wanyama/Rogne at centre half and that is a truly shocking back 4 - much worse than anything Strachan cobbled together in his time.

A truly fightening prospect I'm sure you will agree.

I have to say, on last nights showing, Macq is correct. Ledley and Matthews are pish eh?

I hope you were able to garner some enjoyment out of super Joe Ledley scoring the winner against Rangers and watching our favourite son take his Celtic team to the top of the league, you complete boton.

Can you all just ignore Macq please. He is clearly just a wind-up merchant, whose sad little life thinks it makes him big and important acting like an utter c*ck on this website. Just let him be, with his keyboard, in his room, in the dark, with his mum, and nobody else.
