Celticunderground Top Ten Players of the Season - Preamble PDF Print E-mail

scottish_cup_2011_winners_2This time last year the contributors to the Celticunderground website viewed this task as a punishment rather than a pleasure. After all, season 2009-2010 was hardly a vintage year. So when they were asked to select their top ten players of the year and rank them in order the contributors understandably less than chuffed.

Looking back at the players who made that year's top ten it does seem a bit cruel of me to have put them through it right enough - a season when Josh Thompson and Landry N'Guemo were among the best Celtic had to offer is hardly a good one for the inaugural Celticunderground Top Ten Players of the Year. So I'm willing to put my hands up and admit that there was some justification to their moans that it was too hard a task.

However, I'm now of the opinion that the contributors of this website just like a moan. The call for their top ten players of this season generated just as many complaints as last time round. Admittedly their moans were more to do with how hard it was to narrow the field down to just ten and how difficult it was to rank them in order. So the questions started arriving thick and fast - What makes one player more worthy of 5th place than another? Can I have a top eleven? Does Neil Lennon count in the list? And why can't I put Paul McBride in at number 2? (Answers: just do it; no you can't; nope; nope again.)

So once they had all been told to man up and stop moaning the team got down to the task of selecting their top ten. Once their list was completed it was emailed to CU towers and the data was entered into an old commodore 64 which automagically produced the definitive Celticunderground list of the best players of the season 2010-2011.

So over the next week or so we're going to reveal who we think have been the outstanding performers in what has been a much improved season.

And there is an interactive element to all this. The first person on the huddleboard and KDS who lists the top ten in the correct order will win a copy of, CU contributor, Douglas Beattie's "The Rivals Game."

Our tenth placed player will appear on the site tomorrow morning.

Here's last year's list:

Number 1 - Keane

Number 2 - Boruc

Number 3 - N'Guemo

Number 4 - McGeady

Number 5 - Hinkel

Number 6 - Fortune

Number 7 - Thompson

Number 8 - McCourt

Number 9 - Zaluska

Number 10 - Samaras

Says a lot that you have to go down to number 8 of last year's list to see someone that actually featured in any meaningful way this season.

And to be fair to the guys that picked last season - that ten were pretty much as good as it could have been. I don't think we missed anyone who should have been included. McGeady above N'Guemo is probably an obvious change I would make now but other than that I think it's an accurate reflection of season 2009/10. Sadly.

It says alot about the season that Nguemo was the third best player.

I found him one of the most frustrating players, to play for celtic.

Especially his shooting, corner flag everytime.

Sitting at 1 of the earlier league games this season ,Charlie Mulgrew had either just come on as a sub or was just announced in the team line up cant remember which ,anyway he was roundly booed by supporters near where i sit section 108 , the same supporters gave Big Charlie a standing ovation later on in the season for yet another great display
