The delay in announcing the appointment is due to an ongoing discussion between Lennon's people and officials at the club. We understand that Lawwell and Reid were hoping to present Lennon alongside an experienced older head. Neil was willing to work with John Robertson who has apparently decided to call it a day at Aston Villa. We believe that discussions with Robertson have been taking place for a couple of weeks now but ultimately the former Celtic assistant manager decided that he had had enough of the day to day grind and intends to retire from football. Once this door closed Neil decided that there wasn't another "father figure" type individual who he would be willing to work alongside. The club have eventually agreed that he can run things without the need for an old hand. The reason behind the meeting taking place down South was to allow some London based agents to negotiate with Lennon and Lawwell moves for their players. Lennon has identified a number of players he wishes to bring to the club and it's clear that he is following the MON model of experienced Premiership talent rather than the WGS model of Scottish Premiership journeymen. It is probably common knowledge by now but we understand that a one year loan deal has been agreed with Jimmy Bullard and Hull City. Bullard will join up within the next seven days and may even be unveiled before the weekend. We understand that Celtic will take over responsibility for Bullard's contract and will be required to pay his wages should he be out injured. Bullard is considered to be a dynamic link player who, when fit, is considered to be one of the best players in the Premiership. He has scored 5 times in 15 appearances for Hull. Sol Campbell met with representatives of the club earlier this week and he is expected to sign up for the next two years. Lennon has identified the need for a strong spine and sees Campbell as having the experienced required to help develop Thompson and Rogne. Campbell was keen on a joint coaching role but has been told that he will be an important first team player for the foreseeable future. Martin Petrov is a player who has been offered to Celtic and Rangers. Once it became clear just how little Rangers could offer in terms of salary that offered was swiftly withdrawn. However, the terms he is after are well within Celtic's budget and we are definitely interested. He is not our number one target but a lot will depend on the players who may leave and if we can get another Bulgarian in... Stilian Petrov is a player who Neil Lennon would dearly love to see return to the club. As he has matured Stilian has moved further back and Lennon sees him as the ideal defensive midfielder that was sadly lacking last season. It's well known that Petrov's wife is desperate to return to Celtic and with talk that the coaching team at Villa Park is on the verge of breaking up Stilian may feel that the time is right. If Petrov does not make the move this season we have been told that a defensive midfield from one of the top four in England may be brought in on loan. Liam Lawrence is also a target which is probably common knowledge. He has been identified as a possible replacement for Aiden McGeady who was in London today to discuss terms with two clubs, thought to be Spurs and Birmingham. A figure in the region of £9 million has been mentioned to us with Birmingham being the most likely destination but Spurs being said to be Aiden's preferred choice. Speaking of players heading out the door it's pretty much accepted at Celtic Park that Boruc is away. He has returned to Poland and has said his farewells to a number of the players. We have been told not to expect McManus to return to the club either as he is not considered to be of the calibre required. Paul Caddis also expects to leave the club as his relationship with Lennon has never been close. Samaras' people have already been making clubs on the continent aware of his availability. Mainly because he was described as an imposter by members of the coaching staff following the Ross County game. Others who can go unsurprisingly include Crosas and Mizuno. Joe Ledley is almost certainly going to be a Celtic player within the next couple of days. Ledley is a player who ticks all the boxes - Lennon has identified him as an essential part of his rebuilding of Celtic and Lawwell loves the idea of a 23 year old with a resale value of potentially £8-10 million. What's confusing us is that Lennon is desperate to keep ahold of Scott Brown so where all these midfielders will line up is anyone's guess. Obviously not all will arrive at the club but we have plenty of names on the list and if the top one says no (which he hasn't apparently) we'll just move onto the next. Finally Craig Bellamy is a realistic target for the club. Neil Lennon has identified the need for a top class striker to sign up and he is not hopeful of keeping Robbie Keane (although he would happily keep him if he opts to stay.) With Bellamy and Lennon being close friends, our new manager is well aware that Craig is unwilling to play for Mancini next season. Bellamy has told friends that the only time he truly enjoyed his football was when he was in green and white hoops and if he cannot play for Cardiff in the Premiership he is keen to return to Celtic. We hear that a season long loan deal is being discussed and Bellamy's agent has been talking to Lennon for the past fortnight. As always there will be names we have missed and names we have included who will never appear at Celtic Park. However, these are the names we have been told are on Neil's shopping list. We have been left in no doubt that a significant investment in the club will take place this summer and a number of experienced players will be brought in with the single aim of bringing the title back to Celtic Park. Mind you we have no idea what's going to happen at Celtic Park on June the 11th. We can hardly wait to find out. |

It therefore seems strange then to basically spend all of a limited budget in an overinflated market.
ledley would be an intelligent buy; give him £30,000 on a 4 year deal. if he's mediocre after 2 years sell him £3m (no money wasted) and if he's good sell him for £8m.
bullard, probably a better player, would be a terrible loan signing. if as suggested we are covering his wages (£45,000), we will spend more than £2m on an injury prone player with no resale value-really unintelligent.
apart from bosmans for young players that can be sold on, we should look elsewhere for players.
Of course, I'm not Peter Lawell or Dermot Desmond, so w/e ...
Is that a June 11th that u know about or the Etims "Friday supplement" June 11th "bombshell"?
Hopefully make a bit from the sales of Boruc and McGeady. Thanks for the memories - hope they really make their stamp on a bigger stage.
it's complete nonsense. If you are getting this from good sources connected to the club, then I can only imagine they are leaking these fantasies to try and shift some season books. I can't understand why you would publish such fantasy. It's discrediting the good work of the site IMO.
Twenty minutes ago I was about to read about No.3 in the top ten...Landry. Now I can’t find it...... ¿porqué?
I just hope some of it is true, it will be heartbreaking again for the punters if we get to august and no big names have arrived. I suspect they're trying to sell season books and are only too happy to see us linked with these names. I hope i'm wrong.
I would bite the hand off anybody willing to offer £9m for McGeady, especially if we can use part of the cash buy Lawrence for less. Trapattoni clearly thinks Lawrence is the better player.
I would be concerned to see Bellamy arrive because he's a drinking buddy of Lennon's. Bellamy has a bad attitude and is unlikely to show respect if things don't go smoothly.
Bullard on loan would be a terrible arrangement as well. We need to stop messing about with loan deals or giving ageing players one last pay day. We should actually invest in some half-decent young players that we can then try to punt on at a profit. In this respect I woudl be pleased to see the back of Park as he has picked a succession of duds. My exception to the rule of not giving ageing players a pay day would be Campbell - with all these youing defenders about, having both Campbell and Mjallby working with them would be terrific.
In summary - if this is a load of hot air fed to Eddie to try and shift some season tickets - then it ain't half hot enough yet.
As things stand I'm not renewing, and I firmly endorse HappyDude's sentiment above regarding Lenny being aappointed as a cheap way to appease simpletons.
Boruc was on the train to Bridgeton? Are you havin a freakin laugh?
Print shyte about signings from Africa and South America that never happen, then you never hear anything.....But they always claim at the start it’s all rubbish, hearsay, gossip anyway, you shouldn’t believe any of it. So why do they bother every week?
Spent force, stick with CU I’d say, Etims still livin off the Tommy Gravsen story.......that's been what,4 years now?
Just calling it as I see it. Maybe I'm the simpleton, but at least I'm trying to explain my views instead of just losing the rag.
Lenny has virtually no experience and lost the only game he had to win - against poor opposition to boot.
If we were appointing anybody else with that sort of record we'd all be going bananas.
But because it's Lenny everybody seems to be chucking common sense out the window.
I want Lennon at the club but he's nowhere near ready.
The answer is maybe somewhere in between top level managers and one with next to no experience ( never mind euro experience ) . If you are trying to suggest Lennon is the best manager we can attract then I think you are seriously underestimating our club.
I think if Lennon is finally appointed lots of fans can accuse the board of under ambition. But if they appoint a Euro experienced manager , then even the pro Lennon supporters would be happy.
The Lennon appointment would, I think , cause a bit of of a split within the fans. And be a huge gamble we may never be able to recover from.
O'Neill was welcomed with open arms by an overwhelming majority, Strachan was hated by a majority of fans who couldn't wait to see the back of him from the day he was appointed. Fans have long memories, and some of our fans remember him as a player, not to mention, he wasn't actually 'Celtic-minded' enough for some of those.
Sorry but I don't believe Strachan was hated by the majority of fans from the day he was appointed. I don't even believe he was hated by the majority of fans they day he announced he was standing down. To give those fans a branding of "majority" in some way adds credence to them when in reality they don't deserve it. He was however "hated" by a minority who liked to consider themselves as the vocal majority. You're right he was not Celtic Minded enough for some and I dont believe that "some" was a huge amount of fans but they were the type of fans who would phone up Radio Clyde and Jim Traynor to allow themselves to be portrayed as "typical" by the Pundits.
I recall sitting in my seat at the Motherwell game in April 2008 when we had just been mugged by them and our League challenge looked all but gone. I had to sit and listen to "good time Charlies" walking down the stairs at the final whistle singing "Strachan Strachan get tae F..." 6 weeks later we won the League.
I firmly believe Gordon Strachan was fully appreciated by the majority of the fans who respected his 3 titles out of 4, all done whilst at the same time rejuvenating the very aged squad including sulking MON Signings that he inherited and reducing the wage bill at the same time. He was not everyone's cup of tea but with a 75% League success rate will be among the most successful managers ever at the Club. Most people know that he should have had a 100% success rate for various reasons but even if he had won his 4th Title he would still have been hounded out by certain fans who got what they wished for and what they deserved a few weeks later in the appointment of Tony Mowbray, a poor man's Tommy Burn's.
So..you think we should appoint Lennon because the 5 or so best managers in world football wouldn't take the Celtic job? That's your best reason for appointing him?
I look forward to us applying this logic to the team as well. Lawwell: "We've called Rooney, Kaka, Ronaldo and Drogba, and none of them fancy playing for Celtic. Looks like our only option is to fill the team with a bunch of kids who have played virtually no football at any level."
Do you think that is going to happen to the team? No. We'd all go nuts. So why should it happen when we're trying to appoint a manager?
We have had average attendances of 60,000 over the last decade and offer the possibility of regular Champions League football.
To suggest the only manager we can hope to attract is an untried novice is completely ridculous.
The Board charge top dollar for us to watch the shite we`ve been watching . We are entitled to expect more.
Do you think Dermot Desmond would invite a branch Bank Manager from Byres Rd to be CEO of one of his big financial businesses?
No?
So why do the equivalent with Celtic?
Perhaps if Lawell & Co. stopped treating managers with contempt, buying and selling players over their heads, haggling with previous managers they have sacked about their compensation, and other assorted meddling, then the club wouldn't be such an unnatractive proposition for managers?
Buying players from the most inflated market around? Not so sure on that, especially ones like Bullard and Bellamy who you'd imagine are not going to stay fit for the season's duration.
